First they came for…

First they came for the homesexuals, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Homesexual.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they shot the black men, and I did not speak out-
Because I’m not black and they didn’t shoot me.

Then they came for the women, limiting their health options, and their relative pay, and I did not speak out-
Because I’m not a woman, and hey I can afford the expensive healthcare.

Then they came for the environment, and I did not speak out –
Because I can afford a water filter and live in a city.

Then they came for the illegal immigrants, and I did not speak out –
Because I’m legal.

Then they came for the voting rights of poor people and non-white people, and I did not speak out –
Because I’m white and not poor.

Then they came for the homeless people and I did not speak out –
Because I have a home.

Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak for me.

Being selfish or ignorant are not desirable attributes.

It’s beyond embarrassing that democratically elected members of the U.S. Government think that science is a lie and that being selfish is equally as good as being generous.

Fools will always exist and selfish people will always exist, but knowing someone is an idiot and then voting for that idiot boggles the mind.

We have senators, representatives, governors, judges and even police chiefs that think the world was actually created (in a literal sense) 6000 years ago. They think that weather is manually manipulated by a god in response to any social behavior they don’t agree with. That poor people are only poor because they are lazy. That healthcare should be for-profit. That war is a good thing.

Yes we have people who won most votes in elections that think that immigrants should stay illegal, and that it’s okay to discriminate if you can says it’s for religious reasons. That woman should be subservient, paid less and seen as baby receptacles with no personal rights. That sexual orientation is a reason to discriminate. That taxes should be lowest for those with the most. That white is better than black (because they think that skin color is important). That slavery wasn’t a terrible thing. That it’s okay to be self-centered. That ignorance is as good as knowledge.

These people are just wrong. Shockingly, morally and in my view legally wrong.

Adverb-gate: A Cold War Rages

schoolhouse-rock1The quiet passing of another “National Grammar Day” this month got me thinking. When did the nation stop using adverbs (not to mention grammar and punctuation), correctly?

I have noticed an alarming trend in the application of adverbs within our language. I am sure you have noticed it too… the dropping of the “-ly” from the descriptive word qualifying an adjective, verb or other adverb. For someone who grew up with “Lolly, Lolly,Lolly get your adverbs here” it’s like a slap in the face.

One of the biggest public offenders is the infamous Subway sandwich establishment with their tag lines “Eat Fresh” and “Baked Fresh.” I cringe every time I see their ads. To the wily marketing execs who green lit that phrase: IT IS GRAMMATICALLY INCORRECT! The journalism and English degrees of your team members signify time not well spent. subway-logo-eat-fresh-2

We can also rightly gripe about traffic signs directing us to “Drive Slow” or to “Please Drive Careful.” I’d actually prefer a sign written by Homer Simpson with something like, “Safen up!” written on it when I see those other highway signs that do exist on the roads today.

think-different-appleNow one must admit that Apple just may be quite clever in putting forth their “Think Different” tag line and ads. They either fail or pass grammar depending on whether “different” is supposed to be qualifying the verb “think” or is supposed to be functioning as a destination (a noun) to which we are supposed to convert our thoughts.

Regardless, these examples (seen by millions each day), just cause confusion and set a precedent of bad grammar for new English speakers and generations to come. You don’t need a degree from Carnegie Mellon to get this right, so please tell your children, any immigrants you meet, and everyone else to put back the “-ly” and write smartly; grammar does not have to be executed so crappily.

punctuation-saves-livesOh, and the next front in this cold war? Punctuation!

Playing games with Israel

What a ridiculous situation.

Israel is regularly attacked with missiles and so called suicide bombers by people who don’t recognize its right to exist. These people are clearly funded and supported by a country who has outright said that it wants to destroy Israel.

This country (Iran) has been developing nuclear fuel which with some more development may to used to make a nuclear bomb.
Leaders from many countries have been working using “diplomacy” to try and find a way to not have to go to war with a nuclear Iran.

The senate leader invites the leader of Israel to present to the US congress, but doesn’t tell the US president.

What choice does the Israeli leader have? He will of course jump at any chance to present his case to any part of the US government.

• He can choose to not accept the offer because the President was not involved. But that just makes him look weak.
• He can choose to ask the US president if that is okay, which would make him look week and ineffectual.
• Or he can accept the offer, make his case and include a call out to the US president for all his good works.

He chose option 3, which frankly is what anyone would choose to do.

You don’t have to agree with the politics of the Middle East to realize that it was the only real choice he had. He was a pawn being played by the leader of the senate who invited him.

John Boehner (the lightly orange cry baby) whose name should really be pronounced “Boner” has proven himself to be the most useless man in Washington. Considering the competition that is a very high bar to achieve.
